Monastir's most famous son is Habib Bourguiba,
the founding father of modern Tunisia. Despite being usurped in a coup in
November 1987and declared senile by his former protege Ben Al, Bourguiba
is still revered in his home town and has a very impressive mausoleum. Like
a lot of the monuments in central Monastir a lot of the old city was razed
in order for it to be built. Although ornate and over the top in some respects
it is also a little restrained inside, the man himself lying in a marble
sarcophagus under a large crystal chandelier. Wax models of the great man
are also to be seen, one of which in a rather fetching cream suit with matching
shoes. |
