Eu gosto muito dos bombeiros

Eu gosto muito dos bombeiros

Just as we were leaving to go out last night I noticed what I thought at first was a large, low, grey cloud billowing behind the hill with the wind turbines. Then I could smell smoke. Sure enough, there was a fire raging in the distance, and the wind turbines showed clearly that it was coming in our direction.

I must confess to feeling some unease. We decided not to cancel the invitation out but to take the longer scenic route where we could see where the fire was. Luckily for us it was further away than I first thought. When we drove home I was convinced we would see it glowing red on the horizon – but nada. However, this morning the garden was covered with a fine sprinkling of ash.

And today the choppers are out again. This one was flying right over the house having emptied its huge bucket of water. I think the bombeiros (firefighters) are amazing, already one has lost her life fighting some of the worst summer fires Portugal has seen. Meanwhile the thermometer was reading 34 in the shade, in the sun it shot up to the maximum 55 in no time so have no idea what it is really. The forecast is for the temperatures to steadily fall, with rain in a week’s time. That, for me, would be a welcome change. No doubt for the bombeiros too.

  1. Hi Jackie and Richard,
Very dramatic, maybe you could subcontract the choppers to water your garden when they have a spare mo. Still admiring of all you’ve done, especially now I’m digging over my little town patch of earth; typical September grey and blustery (or perhaps typical all-year) weather to do it in.
Oh yes, remember (sigh, used to be proofreader, you’ll hate me for this) to check out your apostrophe ‘s’ for its.
    Do you like Cesaria Evoria?

  2. Hi Ruth, great to hear from you. What are you thinking of growing in your little town patch? Thanks for the apostrophe alert – very happy to have that pointed out! And yes, we like CE very much. I have seen her twice in concert, once in Madrid and once with Richard in Tunis during one of their Ramadan concerts. Have a number of her CDs but not sure that she has done anything recently.

Aren’t you off to Viet Nam soon? I vaguely remember you said something about visiting your daughter in Oz and then popping into Ha Noi on the way back..? Is that still on?

Hope you’re well – you are always welcome here 🙂

    Jackie xxx

  3. Yes, next month, really looking forward to all that Indochine, only have time for Hanoi, sorry Ha Noi and environs as want to take in Luang Prabang and Vientiane which sound really peaceful and laid back. Will be nice to see my daughter after such a long time, they’re in Sydney, which I also look forward to seeing, expecting stripped wood cafes and bars.
Glad to hear you like Cesoria Evora, she visited Luxembourg too, where there’s a huge Portuguese population.
Thanks for the welcome, when the UK gets desperate I may take you up on it! Have planted lots of herbs, I like useful plants.
