The Americas

This is a trip I did between February and May 1996. From Hawaii to Las Vegas, then south through Mexico, Central America and ending up in Colombia. I uploaded scanned photos from an old photo album in August 2020 and went through my diary of the journey for the descriptions.

Surfin’ USA

This is the first leg of another of those trips down memory lane. Between February and April of 1996 I hopped from Hawaii to Las Vegas and then southwards through Mexico and Central America to Colombia. Down Mexico way.

4 Mar 1996

Coming through the turnstile from USA, Mexican Nogales not surprisingly seemed very different. There were lots of dodgy looking blokes on street corners looking very macho. My diary simply notes that the hotel was OK, $15. The following morning I got a local bus to the main bus station – I had been learning Spanish before I left so I knew it was the Central Camionera. Banana republics

20 Apr 1996

It was Wednesday 20th March and I’d spent just over a month travelling from Hawaii through the USA and Mexico and now I was walking along a dusty road into Guatemala. The first person I saw was a smiling man who was able to fleece me of my Mexican Pesos. Last leg – Panama and Colombia

7 May 1996

Once I was across the river there were minibuses to Almirante. And from there, transfer to a speedboat to Bocas del Torro ($3). I walked to the end of town and found a really nice hotel. Doug told me there are only three places in town and this was the cheapest and best. I got a room for $16 with en suite hot shower (something new for me!).
